My Work (Art Director) : 

When I started working in this department for the first time, things were a bit muddled. The difference between an art director and a production designer wasn't clear in our class, and we were told they pretty much did the same stuff. So, thinking an art director was like the head of the department, I ended up doing all the head of department duties – going on recce, measuring, designing, buying stuff, and handling the budget.

This mix-up cost me some recognition for my work on the film, but despite that, I learned a load about production design. I figured out how to design and build things creatively while sticking to a budget. For instance, we wanted to make a coffin, but the cost of wood was too much for our budget. So, I came up with the idea of using two bits of wood standing up to show the view from inside the coffin. It worked in the film, even though keeping the wood steady during shots was a bit tricky.

I also picked up some useful skills in budgeting and understanding how colours play into designing sets. The shoot was good fun, especially during the setup and pre-production. We had a laugh hiding clues, which seemed funny at the time but looking back, it was a bit silly – but that's what you'd expect from a 19-year-old. Anyway, despite the confusion and challenges, I learned a lot from this shoot and developed a strong interest in production design. This film made me realise I've got talents beyond just writing and directing.
